Afghans are waiting to board a U.S. military plane at a military airport in Kabul after the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan on Wednesday.
The danger of terrorist attacks at Kabul airport is escalating. On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Defense said a suspected suicide bombing occurred near Kabul airport, while an Italian military transport plane confirmed and took action within minutes of takeoff.
As the threat of terrorism has become a reality, countries seem to be rushing to end their ongoing evacuation operations. The Netherlands, Canada and France officially announced an early suspension of evacuation operations. However, the U.S. Department of Defense dismissed the possibility of an early withdrawal, saying it would continue evacuation work until the 31st of this month.
◇ Italian military plane shooting?…There was an explosion outside the airport.
Reuters quoted an Italian military source as saying that the Italian military transport plane was shot as it left Afghanistan's Kabul airport, but the aircraft was not damaged.
The aircraft reportedly had about 100 Afghan civilians on board.
However, Reuters quoted an Italian intelligence official as saying that the shooting was not a direct attack on the military transport plane but was intended to disperse the crowd near Kabul Airport.
An Italian reporter who boarded the plane told the Italian media Sky 24 TF, "It happened a few minutes after takeoff, and the pilot seemed to have arrived, but he responded quickly to avoid being attacked."
There was also a suspected suicide bombing. The U.S. Department of Defense said an explosion occurred outside Kabul airport and casualties occurred. U.S. President Joe Biden is currently being reported at the White House, Reuters said.
The cause or behind the bombing is not yet known. However, it is highly likely that they are responsible for the possible terrorist attacks of ISIS factions, a hostile Islamic extremist group, to stir up chaos in the Taliban-controlled Afghan political situation.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the danger of terrorism is escalating as the Afghan government collapsed and Taliban, al Qaeda and ISIS members who were imprisoned in Kabul were released. There has been a possibility that IS-K, which is not on good terms with the Taliban due to its clique, could launch terrorist activities such as suicide bombing near Kabul airport, and the U.S. and British embassies have warned of their possible terrorist attacks.
◇ "It's a pity that we couldn't bring both the people and the Afghans."
As the threat of terrorism in Kabul becomes a reality, more countries are expected to withdraw evacuation work early.
According to AFP, the Netherlands, Canada and France have already announced early termination of evacuation operations.
"The evacuation operation in Kabul has been suspended," Canadian Defense Ministry spokesman Wayne Air said at a news conference. "I wanted to bring everyone who wanted to stay longer and leave, but I'm sorry I couldn't. "The situation in the country has deteriorated dramatically," he said.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex told local RTL radio that the evacuation of French nationals and local assistants will end on the night of the 27th. "The remaining French troops and embassy staff will do their best to evacuate civilians before the end of the mission."
The Dutch government will also suspend evacuation flights from Kabul at the end of the day. "It's bad news that we can't take the Dutch people and others away from Kabul," Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said. "As a result of the military's contact with France and Belgium, they have also declared an end to the evacuation, and Britain and Germany are also considering it."
The Pentagon immediately denied the report as the U.S. reportedly withdrew its evacuation work early this weekend.
"The evacuation operation in Kabul will not be over in 36 hours," Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said. "We will evacuate as many people as we can until the mission is over.
